Tune in to learn how small changes in daily activity can lead to big improvements in cognitive performance and overall mental wellness.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Charlie Gray, and you’re listening to the Wellness One podcast, coming to you from right here in Hickory, North Carolina. I’m so glad you’re spending a few minutes with me today, because we’re going to talk about something that affects just about everyone I see in my practice — and honestly, something I think about a lot in my own life. We’re talking about mental clarity and focus, and the surprising role that movement plays in keeping your mind sharp.

Now, you might be thinking — Doctor Gray, I came to you for my back. What does movement have to do with how clear my head feels? And that is such a great question. Because the truth is, your brain and your body are not separate systems. They are constantly talking to each other. And when one is struggling, the other one feels it too.

Here’s what’s interesting. When you move your body — whether that’s a walk around the block, some gentle stretching, or even just standing up and changing positions — you’re actually doing something really powerful for your brain. Movement increases blood flow throughout your entire body, including your brain. And your brain is hungry for that oxygen-rich blood. It thrives on it. So when you’re sitting still for long stretches of time, your circulation slows down, and your brain starts to feel it. That foggy, sluggish feeling in the middle of the afternoon? A lot of that comes down to simply not moving enough.

Now, here’s the thing that I find really fascinating from a chiropractic standpoint. Your spine is at the center of all of this. Your nervous system runs through it. And when your spine is moving well — when the joints are mobile and not restricted — your nervous system can communicate more efficiently. Think of it like a highway. When traffic is flowing, messages get where they need to go. When there’s a bottleneck, everything slows down. That’s part of why so many of my patients tell me they just feel better overall after an adjustment. Not just their back — their whole system feels more awake.

So what can you start doing today? First, break up your sitting time. Every thirty minutes or so, stand up. Take a short walk to the kitchen, do a few shoulder rolls, look out the window. It doesn’t have to be a workout. It just has to be movement. Your brain will thank you for it. Second, pay attention to your posture when you’re sitting. When your head drifts forward and your shoulders round, that puts extra stress on your neck and upper back, and it actually compresses the muscles and joints that support good nerve flow. Try to sit tall, keep your screen at eye level, and take those breaks.

And honestly, even just getting outside for a ten-minute walk in the fresh air can completely reset your focus for the rest of the afternoon. I recommend it to patients all the time, and the ones who actually do it always come back and say — Doctor Gray, you were right. I didn’t realize how much it would help.

Now, if you’ve been dealing with brain fog, low energy, trouble concentrating — and you’ve already tried getting more sleep and drinking more water and none of that seems to be cutting it — it might be worth having your spine evaluated. Sometimes there are restrictions in the spine that are quietly affecting how well your nervous system is functioning. It’s not always obvious, but it can make a real difference when we address it.

At Wellness One, that’s exactly what we do. We look at the whole picture — your spine, your movement, your posture — and we help you find solutions that work for your real life.
